What we believe at NEW Beginnings Uniting Church about Jesus, the Bible, and the Church

Our Beliefs

God & Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is at the center of everything. We believe that Jesus is the only one who can reconcile us to God. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life.

We believe in one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is the second member of the Trinity (the Son of God) who took human form to reveal God to all people and to become the Saviour of the lost world.

Matthew 28:19, 1 Peter 1:2, 2 Corinthians 13:14

The bible

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that men were moved by the Spirit of God to write the very words of Scripture. Therefore, we believe the Bible guides our faith and we are obedient to the Word of God.

The Church has received the books of the Old and New Testaments as unique prophetic and apostolic testimony, in which it hears the Word of God and by which its faith and obedience are nourished and regulated.

2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21

Humankind

We believe that humankind was created in the image of God to have a close relationship with God but became separated in that relationship through sinful disobedience. As a result, humankind is incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through their efforts alone.

Genesis 1:27, Psalm 8:3-6, Isaiah 53:6a, Romans 3:23, Isaiah 59:1-2

Salvation

We believe that the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, salvation occurs only when people place their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for their sin.

The Church preaches Christ the risen crucified One and confesses him as Lord to the glory of God the Father. In Jesus Christ “God was reconciling the world to himself ” (2 Corinthians 5:19 RSV). In love for the world, God gave the Son to take away the world’s sin.

Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 14:6; 1:12, Titus 3:5, Galatians 3:26, Romans 5:1

THE Christian Life

We believe that every Christian should live for Christ and not for themselves. By obedience to the Word of God and daily yielding to the Spirit of God, every believer should mature and be conformed to the image of Christ.

We affirm that every member of the Church is engaged to confess the faith of Christ crucified and to be his faithful servant. We acknowledge with thanksgiving that the one Spirit has endowed the members of Christ’s Church with a diversity of gifts, and that there is no gift without its corresponding service.

Romans 1:15-17, 2 Corinthians 3:18, 1 Corinthians 1:17-18

THE CHURCH

We believe that the church is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head. The members of the church are those who have trusted by faith the finished work of Christ. The purpose of the church is to glorify God by loving Him and by making Him known to the lost world.

The Congregation is the embodiment in one place of the One Holy and Apostolic Church, worshipping, witnessing and serving as a fellowship of the Spirit in Christ. Its members meet regularly to hear God’s Word, to celebrate the sacraments, to build one another up in love, to share in the wider responsibilities of the Church, and to serve the world.

Matthew 16:18, Ephesians 1:18-23, Colossians 1:18, Romans 12:1, Acts 17:23-24
